  • Interview: Five minutes with: R&B star Shontelle at Dubai’s Cavalli Club

She’s the original Barbadian music star, when she’s not performing in Dubai you can catch her relaxing on the beach and as well as a songbird, she’s also a legal eagle. We shoot the breeze with Shontelle Layne, before she does her thing at Dubai’s Cavalli Club on 30th December, supported by Enzo. Can’t make the gig? You’ll miss an exclusive preview of the 30-year-old singer songwriter’s new single, but why not stick on debut album Shontelligence and enjoy shining R&B singles ‘Tshirt’ and ‘Battlecry’?

You’ve played in Dubai a lot Shontelle. What brings you back?

I can’t explain how much I love Dubai. Any opportunity to visit I’ll take! The experience of performing and being in Dubai is so elating, and coming from such a small island so far away, I feel so blessed.

I have some great friends and fans in Dubai who are the reason I am able to come here and sing so often. I’ll be performing at the fabulous Cavalli Club again and I can’t wait! Thanks to my agency Level A Management for always take care of me in the Middle East.

Do you have any great hangouts here we should know about – what’s your favourite restaurant/bar/place to shop?

Everyone must go to the Dubai Mall to shop (we hear you, sister).

I really enjoy the Marina and you cannot visit Dubai without seeing the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain! What a fantastic display of art and engineering! But when it’s time to relax I love going to Jumeirah Beach. I love how you can see Burj Al Arab from the beach and the staff brings you cold towels, frozen treats and fresh fruit to keep you cool in the blazing heat.

You’re performing December 30th, so does that mean you get New Year’s Eve off? Where’s your perfect place to see in the New Year?

I never have NYE off. The perfect place to see in the New Year? Dubai of course!

Any New Year’s resolutions, for your career or personal life?

My biggest resolution is to pay more attention and be more proactive with decisions made as far as both my career and personal life go. Taking things into my own hands and learning not to rely on anyone else. Just make it happen and always ask questions when you don’t know.

Never be afraid. Sometimes if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.

You’re also a talented songwriter – anyone you’d love to write for in 2016?

I would love to continue writing for Rihanna and I want to work with Bruno Mars again. I still think it would be fun to write with Alicia Keys or Stevie Wonder. Maybe Beyonce. And although Adele’s songs are very personal and she does lots of her own writing, somehow I feel I have a few songs already written that would fit her perfectly.

I also really enjoy writing for new talent. We’ll see what 2016 brings my way.

Finally, is it true you have a degree in entertainment law? If you hadn’t become a music star, would you be a lawyer?

Its true I studied entertainment law. I most likely would have joined the bar and practised for sure. But I would still find a way to be strongly involved in music. And I would definitely still be writing.
